2006 Lecture Series

Sponsored by the Friends of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, a not-for-profit charitable organization that promotes this treasure of a nearly 70,000-acre recreation area

Evening lectures are at 7 p.m. at the Bushkill Meeting Center, Route 209, south of the Bushkill, PA, traffic light.Family Fun Days will be at the same location in the afternoons.

All events are free and open to the public. Light refreshments served.

May 20 Spring Family Fun Day- Rick Mikula’s “Butterflies of the World.”
Hands-on activities for children will include building a butterfly house; butterfly lifecycle craft project using paper plates and some markers and several different types of pasta to illustrate the 4 stages of butterfly development; and a cutout butterfly mobile. Mr. Mikula has been among the most popular of our presenters to adults. This is the first time we are presenting a program for all ages…Adults will still enjoy this presentation.

June 10 Grassland Birds at Delaware Water Gap” -- Dr. Terry Master, East Stroudsburg University.
Dr. Master and several of his students recently completed research on grassland bird populations in this recreation area. His research findings have just been published and he will share them with us along with a description of their research methods.

July 15 “The Search for Lost Species: The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker” -- Scott Weidensaul.
Pulitzer Prize-nominated nature writer Scott Weidensaul has written over 2 dozen books on natural history, the latest of which is The Ghost With Trembling Wings: Science, Wishful Thinking and the Search for the Lost Species. Mr. Weidensaul is involved with the Nature Conservancy and Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology in the search of an Arkansas swamp for the supposedly extinct but recently sighted Ivory-Billed Woodpecker. He writes a weekly nature column for the Philadelphia Inquirer, and contributes regularly to Smithsonian, Audubon, and Natural History magazines. He also is involved in ProjectOwlnet research, a featured program at the 2005 lectures.

August 19 Moths: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly by “Mothman” John Laskowski.
Mr. Laskowski’s programs come highly recommended by Rick Mikula - a similar type of show with both live and preserved specimens and a slide show. He also does a “night lighting” demonstration outside. He will set up white sheets earlier in the day and then go back at night with lights and “will show you things that will make you want to stay indoors after dark!”

Sept. 16 From Lyme Disease to Car Accidents: How Overabundant Deer Impact Our Quality of Life by Dr. Timothy Schaeffer, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Audubon Society
The title really says it all.

Oct. 14 “Close Encounters With Birds of Prey” by Bill Streeter of the Delaware Valley Raptor Center in nearby Milford. PA. Features 5 live raptors! Appropriately timed for fall migration along the Kittatinny Ridge.

Nov. 4 Fall Family Fun Day - Lenape Lifeways with John Kraft
November is Native American History Month. Hands-on activity for this fun day will include making corn husk dolls. 1-3 pm (time may change)
